New Prior Provincial of the Province of India

 

Peter Mendonsa, OP, is the new Prior Provincial of the Province of India.

On 30 August 2024, during the elective Chapter of the Province of India, held at Satyagiri, Dominican Retreat Center, Brother Peter Mendonsa, OP, then Superior of the community of St. Dominic in Delhi, was elected Prior Provincial. On the same day, he was confirmed by the Master of the Order, Br. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, with the signature of his vicar, Br. Pablo Carlos Sicouly, OP, and on the same day accepted this office. Br. Peter succeeds Br. Prasad George, OP, who served as Provincial for a term beginning in 2020.

Born in 1967 in Shankerapura, Udupi district, Karnataka State, India, Br. Peter joined the postulancy in St. Dominic’s, Mangalore in the year 1983. He joined the Novitiate in the Order of Preachers in Pachmarhi, Madya Pradesh, making his simple profession in 1987 and his solemn profession in 1993 in Nagpur.  Brother Peter completed his first cycle of philosophical and theological studies from Nagpur, where he was ordained a deacon. He was ordained a priest on 31 May 1995. He obtained a doctorate from the Faculty of Theology of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (2001-2006).

Among the pastoral assignments of Br. Peter include the following: a parochial post at St. Dominic’s Parish, Mangalore, until 2000; the first superior of the house of Immaculate Conception in Bellore, Mangalore (2007-2010); Novice Master (2012-2015); Rector of St. Charles Seminary (2015-2021); and superior of St. Dominic’s Delhi while serving also as the Parish Priest of St. Dominic’s Church, Delhi (2022-2024).  Br. Peter is a well-known preacher, accompanying spiritual retreats, and teaching pastoral Theology, Homiletics and Interreligious dialogue in the Seminary.
